That makes so much sense. At first when I listened to your track I thought there was only one intricate wobble bassline. But then, when I pulled your project and soloed the bass tracks, I saw that it was actually like 4 or so different bass tracks/sounds/timbres working together "playing ball with each other" to form basically a single phrase. Brilliant! Coming from a guitar/bass guitar background where I would play and record one track of one instrument playing one performance line this blows my mind. I can't wait to utilize that technique on my next project. Thank you so much!

@Reid Perkins (Delta-P) Thanks a lot for your kind words, that means a lot to me! I'm glad you enjoyed the song! One tip I learned from practice : to create intricate basslines , try having different synths or bass patches that "play with each other", as if they were playing ball. It really adds movement, and different timbres can help achieve an interesting, evolving bassline. Also, you can try to bounce your midi parts to audio, and then mess with them some more (chop, copy, paste, layer them, staccato, repitch, warp mode, etc). You'll most likely be surprised with the results you get! Cheers from Montreal. Happy producing!

@Decktonic that does help so much, thank you for all of your input! I am going to apply those ideas to my next project. @JazzBox dude, wow thank you also so much! Your entry in the project is my absolute favorite so I really appreciate your comments. You killed it, man! Your amazing bass timbre is exactly along the lines of what I was trying to go after but I just don't know how to get the sound out of the box. I pulled your project to see what I could learn and I'm studying it right now. :) Thank you so much for all of your comments and suggestions. I agree about the bass needing more high end and the kick drum getting lost in the mix, I am going to see what I can do about it. I have learned so much from this contest and being in the company of such good producers. Again, thank you all so much for your help, I look forward to working with you guys more.

Good job on that remix! I like the synth stabs you introduce at 0.13s . Great soul vibe and catchy chord progression ! Your wobble bass sounds to me like it could use a little more high end, and it seems to be fighting with your kick drum. Maybe consider a little more sidechain? Other than that great work, keep at it!

Making a punchy drop is all about filling the frequency range as much as possible. It's not about volume. Dubstep producers usually layer multiple bass tracks (think of 4+ Massive presets all playing the same line across 2 or 3 octaves) in order to get that powerful sound. To start, I recommend adding a low bass kick right where the drop starts, something with a lot of sub-bass. Then, I recommend adding a sub bass patch (something you feel more than you hear) that hits the same note at the drop and plays a simplified version of the bassline throughout. You can raise the velocity on the first hit to increase the effect. You can use EQ Eight to confine each bass track to a narrow frequency range if they clash with each other (harmonics are a dangerous thing!). I'm not an expert in this area but you can check out the track Seppuku Bot on my profile page. It has a couple of these techniques. Have a look at the tracks SUB and Hammer in the Ableton project and you'll see how they work. Also, the 909 kick on track 3 has a ton of low end punch while the main drum loop is more of a mid-range standard dubstep drum kit. Anyway, hope that helps.

@Decktonic Thanks! I'll bring the bass down a little bit. You have no idea how much I appreciate your input. Any ideas on how I can make the drop into the wobble bass at 1:30 really punch without clipping or the bass being to loud? Man, I wish I had some high end headphones or any head phones for that matter. That is why I entered this contest in hope of at least coming in third to win a pair. Right now Im using a borrowed pair of my friend's Audio-Technicas. They are great and I really appreciate them, but I also don't have any studio monitors so it is really hard to get a good mix. I think in addition to my novice mixing skills, that is why my mixes are too bass heavy.. Anyways, I have to say while I'm talking to you that I love your Youth Worship EP. It is very well produced and has been on repeat on my Soundcloud all this week so I really value your opinion. So thanks again for all of your help!

@Reid Perkins (Delta-P) it's an improvement! I think the bass (at 1:30) is too loud. On high end headphones it drowns out everything else. The rest is pretty good!

@Davarunaman, what DAW do you use?
Delta Mod10 years ago
@Davarunaman oh man thank you so much! I wish you could play around with it too. I'd love to hear some other people's input. You gotta get Ableton man, you won't be disappointed. :)

3 days Later, this sounds great and I want to play with it! I don't use ableton, so wonder what options I have to even be on this site.

EQ'd some more. Still not happy with the mix..

I re-mixed the tracks and reduced the clipping. @Decktonic is this any better? If anyone has any recommendations, comments, advice, etc they are all most appreciated. Thanks again for everyone's input.
Delta Mod10 years ago
@Decktonic thank you so much for that advice! I am a total noob at mixing so any comments, criticisms, tricks, and words of wisdom you or anyone has I appreciate so, so much. I'm going to work on that today and post the update tomorrow. Thanks again!
Decktonic10 years ago
I like this! But you should know that everything is clipping like crazy. Bring the levels on everything down and use a compressor like gentle squeeze if you still want your mix to sound "loud."
Delta Mod10 years ago
Hey Steve, are you able (if you wanted) to pull my project? I don't see that option up there and I'm wondering if it is just cause it is my project or did I do something wrong? Sorry I'm a total noob. :)
Delta Mod10 years ago
It is just analog in Ableton.

What synth are you using on this. It's so awesome I must know.
