The American folklorist Alan Lomax (1915-2002) made during his remarkable career thousands of field recordings consisting of songs, music and poetry. Thanks to the Association for Cultural Equity, the nonprofit organization Lomax founded, many of those recordings can today be attained online. I have for some time now thought of doing something based on the Lomax archives, and this piece is the first one in that sense. The vocal track is a song Lomax recorded while visiting prisoners in year 1949, and I only polished the original recording a bit and added my own stems along with it. Please note that since the original song for natural reasons is not a click track, also the backing tracks and their tempo vary related to the original vocals. However the starting tempo of the prison singers is somewhat 66.5 BPM. If you visit the foundation website, you can find this and many other Lomax recordings available free for non-commercial use.
