Progress:Rough Draft
First assignment for the Ableton Live course by Erin Barra.
This is my first attempt at using a session-driven compositional approach and something that resembles electronic music (I've been mostly into jazz, rock and vocal and choir music in the past).
I'd love feedback about choice of sounds, better use of drums, production tips in general and any other form of constructive criticism.

Your jazz influences really show here . Great first project . I have yet to use Session view for arranging, well successfully anyway lol

Like the Bass line - An interesting mix of instruments/sounds that seems to work. (vocoder, piano, flute, trumpet ???) - Good 1st project. :-) The Hutch https://blend.io/TheHutch

Very cool bass, cool reverb on the drum, non l'avrei messo anche sul chaleston, però pazienza, thanks

Ha thanks @Skowster ... TBH when I started this track I had no idea what I was trying to do. It was when I added the bass (which was the 4th MIDI track) that things started to take shape.

Definitely sounds like you know exactly what you are doing rather than fooling. Love the Vocoder-sounding bass. You created tension in the right spots.

Thanks for your comments @Thomas Lopez @RobDSK I've made some changes from your suggestions that hopefully have improved this track

Hi thanks Kurt. Feel free to pull and check it out. For bass I've use Detuned2 Low Pass Bass (slightly edited preset), with some overlaid Saw9 Reso Detuned Lead, Chiffy Sinusoid Lead, Space Arp, Celestial Pad, Clicky, Vocosyn, and Trumpet Solo (from orchestral brass).

Added a central section with trumpet, and finishing touches for evaluation.

Hey Charles I liking your synth man, As you might find out, I am a synth guy too. Which instrument did you use? I think I would mix up the temp and notes a little more

Layered some bass, added a trumpet at the end, and panned things a bit.

You're totally right Thomas, the volumes are not well balanced - I haven't been paying enough attention to that. I will review and fix.

Really like the beat, nice and smooth... Perhaps sytnh at beggining is a bit too loud?

Sounds cool RobDSK. The vocoder sound is stock "Vocosyn" from the core library.

i'm gonna take a stab at your bassline and let you hear what i was thinking..
RobDSK9 years ago
that vocoder sound is wicked... i like your bassline and could see that going into some cool directions duplicated./layered with some top end synths as well
